Austin Hill's Townhall.com Column

Austin Hill is a part of the next generation of American media personalities. He currently co-hosts the afternoon talk show on NewsTalk 960 KKNT radio in Phoenix, and is a part time talk host for 630 W M A L in Washington, D.C., KFI AM 640 in Los Angeles, and 1080 K R L D in Dallas. He is also a fill-in host on "Sonoran Living," the lifestyle talk show which airs middays on ABC15 TV (KNXV-TV) in Phoenix.

Hill's life journey in the radio industry began at the young age of 17, during his junior year of high school. Along with the typical teenage milieu of academics and sports, he made time to pursue his passion for broadcasting every Tuesday night at KVPR - FM Radio , Fresno California's affiliate of National Public Radio . Starting as a studio technician, he operated the main control console during the evening's final hour of the " All Things Considered " program, and then continued during the following three hours of local and national N.P.R. programming, while at the same time making on-air announcements three times an hour. The programming content was not particularly interesting to him at the time ("I was into rock-n-roll, just like most kids" Hill recalls), but it didn't matter; it was radio broadcasting, and he was "on the air."

Weeks after his high school graduation, Hill got to combine his love for radio and contemporary music. While juggling classes at Fresno City College, he simultaneously landed his first "full time" broadcasting position at "Magic 104," Fresno's then-new "Contemporary Hits" radio station, and a year later moved up to the market-dominant KYNO - FM.

By the age of 20, Hill had already accrued some tremendous experience in the world of radio, yet he remained focused on his college education. After being accepted at the prestigious California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, he re-located to California's Central Coast and earned his Bachelor's Degree in English Literature. Along with his academic pursuits, Hill continued in the radio industry, working throughout his university years at KSLY-FM, and KZOZ - FM .

After college graduation, Hill returned to his native Southern California and worked on-air at Orange County California's KYMS - F M, San Diego's "Mix 94.9 FM," and K Z L A - F M in Hollywood . During his six years working at K Z L A as a music host and news anchor, Hill began writing periodically for the Orange County Register , and periodically guest hosting for KCET Television. He also made occasional guest appearances on national and international televison programs including ABC-TV's " Good Morning America " and a featured music program for the B.B.C. Television Network in the U.K. And as if he didn't have enough to do during his "L.A. years," Hill also made time during this season of his life to earn a Master's Degree in Ethical Philosophy from Biola University , in La Mirada, California.

In 1999, Hill was recruited away from his native home of Southern California to help launch the then-new News Talk 1280 KTKP in Phoenix Arizona, where he led the station in morning drive to the greatest ratings successes in its history. Two years later, Hill joined ClearChannel Communications' NewsTalk 550 KFYI , beginning as an evening host, and eventually moving-on to co-host afternoon drive. During his years there (2001 - 2005), Hill helped KFYI conquer the city's perrenial talk radio leader KTAR , and become the #1 radio station in Phoenix.

Hill lives in suburban Phoenix with his wife and son. He is a frequent host for community and charity events, and peridocially speaks to audiences around the country on a broad range of issues including politics, culture, relationships and family. He is the co-author of the book "White House Confidential: The Little Book Of Weird Presidential History" with Gregg Stebben, which is published and distributed by Cumberland House Publishing, and he is a frequent guest on radio and television programs around the world discussing topics related to the book.
